Asset Manager - Frequently Asked Questions
How does Asset Manager identify all the software installed in my environment?
Asset Manager looks at the Add/Remove programs through WMI and a hard drive scan and matches it against a Software Pattern Identification Database (SPID) with over 90,000 applications to identify software on your network.
What about tracking license and license usage on my VMware or Citrix environments?
Asset Manager can track licenses in virtual and physical environments. Optional module licenses are available for VMware ESX Server and Citrix XenApp.
What operating systems does the client support? What operating systems does the server require?
The Asset Manager client can be installed on computers/virtual machines running Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2008 R2, Windows Server 2003/2003 R2, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
The server must be installed on Windows Server 2003 SP 1 or higher, Server 2003 R2 and Windows Server 2008/2008 R2.
What are the installation prerequisites for Asset Manager?
Asset Manager requires Microsoft IIS web server installed with .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 and a local or remote Microsoft SQL Server for storing all collected data.
What databases are supported?
Asset Manager supports Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 (Standard, Enterprise or Express Edition).
How long does it take to set up? Does it require me to install software on my desktops?
Setup takes only a few minutes using the Asset Manager installation wizard. A small 200 KB agent that collects data and transfers it to the Asset Manager system is required to run on the target PC’s. The agent uses approximately 7-8 MB of RAM.
What happens during Installation?
The server is updated with MDAC and the .Net Framework

A database (default name SLAM) is created either on an existing SQL server or a new instance of MSDE
Do I have to add every user/object in my Active Directory to Asset Manager?
No. Asset Manager integrates with Active Directory and not only imports the users but the complete OU structure and all the standard information fields.
How should Asset Manager connect to the SQL Server?
During setup you can choose between 2 options which is Windows Integrated Authentication or SQL Authentication. It is recommended to use SQL Server Authentication. If you use Windows Authentication, then all the Asset Manager users must have privileges to access the database server.
How is Asset Manager different from Microsoft SMS 2003 or SCCM 2007? Do I have to install another agent if I have SMS/SCCM already implemented?
Asset Manager not only collects inventory and does software metering but also manages your licenses. With the Asset Manager SMS/SCCM option module you benefit from using one agent, with the option of running the much smaller Asset Manger agent on desktops.

System Requirements
ScriptLogic Asset Manager requires a Microsoft Windows Server host ("ScriptLogic Asset Manager Server”) and a Microsoft SQL database ("ScriptLogic Asset Manager Database”).
While the ScriptLogic Asset Manager Server software requirements are always the same, the ScriptLogic Asset Manager Server hardware requirements and ScriptLogic Asset Manager Database system requirements depend on the environment - number of Client PC’s processed by Asset Manager. We define three types of environments:
-
Small scale – less than 500 client computers;
-
Mid scale – 500 to 5.000 client computers;
-
Large scale – more than 5.000 client computers.
The scale of the environment is important because more clients require more disk storage and will put a heavier load on the server running ScriptLogic Asset Manager.
