What is MSI Studio?
MSI Studio is a comprehensive application packaging solution that gives administrators and software packagers the ability to quickly and easily create, edit, customize and build MSI packages.
What is an MSI?
Microsoft Software Installer (MSI) files are Microsoft's Windows Installer files. A single MSI can contain the files to be installed, the setup application, and the customizations to the setup, giving Windows administrators a simple method to deploy standardized applications.
What can I package with MSI Studio?
MSI Studio can package legacy applications into MSI files, repackage existing MSIs, create transforms (which customize the options during an installation) and even compare existing MSI packages.
Does MSI Studio require a client installation?
No. All packaging is performed centrally with MSI Studio remotely monitoring a reference machine where the application to be mass deployed is being installed.
Why should I package applications?
Creating a packaged application ensures an application is deployed consistently throughout the enterprise. Additionally, when creating a package, you can validate, and even test deploy to ensure reliability of the deployment. No user interaction would be required (unless specified when creating the package) to deploy the application.
What is MCE validation?
MCE validation is MSI Studio's faster implementation of Microsoft's ICE (Internal Consistency Evaluators) validation. MCE more rapidly determines errors with greater efficiency and links the errors directly to the MSI table entries for faster fixing of the problems.
I noticed MSI Studio requires the .NET framework 2.0. Will all MSIfiles created require the .NET framework?
No — Windows only requires the Windows Installer Runtime to process MSI files. The Windows Installer Runtime is updated through Service Packs and Windows Update.

What is the difference between MSI Studio and the Pro or Configuration Manager editions?
MSI Studio Pro and MSI Studio for Configuration Manager includes all the features of MSI Studio and two new features: Zero-Touch Testing and Conflict Resolution. Zero Touch Testing allows you to perform a test deployment onto a machine without actually installing the package to see what conflicts may arise once you put the package into production. MSI Studio Pro and MSI Studio for Configuration Manager also maintains a Conflict Resolution repository to compare new packages against to determine if any existing packages already in the repository will conflict with the newly created package.MSI Studio for Configuration Manager integrates seamlessly with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007. Once you have completed an MSI package, you can pass it directly to Configuration Manager 2007 for deployment. You can also specify any advanced options directly from MSI Studio for Configuration Manager.
How can I evaluate MSI Studio Pro or MSI Studio for Configuration Manager?
Evaluation versions of MSI Studio, MSI Studio Pro and MSI Studio for Configuration Manager can be downloaded from this website.strong>I have already purchased a copy of MSI Studio. How can I evaluate the Pro or Configuration Manager editions?
If you download and install the Pro or Configuration Manager editions over your current installation, your existing license key will force the install to operate the non-Pro. To properly evaluate the advanced edition, you should install the evaluation on a separate machine.
What integration is there with Desktop Authority?
MSI Studio and MSI Studio Pro can be used standalone, or together with Desktop Authority for greater value. From the "Software Management" interface under Global Options in Desktop Authority you can create and edit MSIs from DA's software repository using MSI Studio, and save the changes directly back into Desktop Authority's software management for deployment.
What integration is there with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007?
MSI Studio for Configuration Manager can export MSIs directly into SCCM 2007. Once you have created, captured or edited an MSI package, publishing that application through SCCM is just a few clicks through a wizard.

MSI Studio™ - Licensing
How is MSI Studio licensed?
MSI Studio is licensed per individual staff member performing application packaging. This means you must purchase 1 user license for each person responsible for packaging, regardless of concurrent usage.
Example 1:
Company A has 3 staff members responsible for packaging applications for 5000 users. They need 3 licenses, even if no more than one staff member is running MSI Studio at a time.
What licensing system does MSI Studio use?
What user license quantities are available?
Licenses are available in any quantity above the minimum of 1.
Is an evaluation license available? What restrictions does it have?
Yes, a 30-day evaluation is available for download. It will only let you create MSIs with a limited range of package GUIDs.
Can I extend my evaluation?
Yes. You can request an extension for an evaluation license, contact sales@dbl.co.uk
I'd like to purchase MSI Studio. Will I have to uninstall the evaluation version and/or reinstall MSI Studio once I purchase the appropriate license?
No, all that is required is to enter in the registration code you received with your purchase to convert the evaluation edition to the full product.

How are licenses delivered?
Once your order has been processed you will receive your license code or file by e-mail.
How can I add more licenses?
The process is the same for all products, contact sales@dbl.co.uk to purchase more licenses. When your order has been processed you will be provided with a new electronic license for the total quantity of licenses you purchased.
Do you offer any types of discounts?
Discounts are available for customers buying larger quantities of each product. Contact sales@dbl.co.uk for more details.
What about shrink-wrap product?
ScriptLogic does not sell any of its products with shrink-wrap packaging. All delivery of software and licenses is electronic.
