Security Explorer® for Exchange - Frequently Asked Questions
What does Security Explorer for Exchange manage?
Security Explorer for Exchange manages permissions on mailboxes and mailbox folders, public folders, administrative groups, storage groups, mailbox and public folders stores, and Exchange Servers. Exchange permissions are stored both in Active Directory and on the Outlook client. Security Explorer for Exchange manages all of these permissions from one location.
Can’t I perform the same tasks with the native Exchange management tools?
Security Explorer provides added functionality that is not available with native tools such as cloning permissions, searching of permissions and backup and restore of permissions. Additionally, there is no way to centrally view or manage mailbox folder permissions, such as the Outlook calendar using the native Exchange management tools since these permissions are managed through Outlook.
What versions of Exchange are supported?
Security Explorer for Exchange supports Exchange 2000, 2003, and 2007.
How does the permissions backup and restore function work?
Permissions can be backed up on any Exchange object including mailboxes and all of the folders associated to that mailbox, public folders, administrative groups, etc. Permissions are backed up to a flat file anywhere you choose. This is a fast operation since it only backs up the permissions information, not the data itself. Restoring permissions is as simple as selecting a backup file, navigating to the location where you want to repair permissions and restoring them to the state they were at the time of the backup. You can also compare the backed up permissions to the live permissions to ensure they are correct before making any change.
Is there a way to evaluate Security Explorer for Exchange?
Yes! A fully-functional 30-day evaluation download is available at scriptlogic.com for managing servers and workstations across the network.
Does Security Explorer help with compliance initiatives?
Yes. Security Explorer gives administrators the ability to implement the security required by compliance standards such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, GLBA and ITIL.

If you already own licenses for other Security Explorer components you can simply add Exchange mailbox licenses and you will be able to use Security Explorer for Exchange.
Do I need a license for every mailbox in my Exchange Organization?

What happens if I exceed my license count?

Is an evaluation license available? What restrictions does it have?
