Security Explorer® for SharePoint - Frequently Asked Questions
Can't I perform these same tasks with the SharePoint admin console?
Security Explorer provides added functionality that is not available with native tools such as searching of permissions and backup and restore of permissions. Even other tasks like changing permission levels and SharePoint group management are only one click away making Security Explorer an efficient solution for SharePoint security management.
What versions of SharePoint does Security Explorer support?
Windows SharePoint Services v3 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.
Does Security Explorer for SharePoint create reports?
Security Explorer for SharePoint can export a complete list of permissions, but does not offer a wide range of formats, analysis or ability to filter and select what to report on. If you are looking for a true security reporting solution, take a look at Enterprise Security Reporter.
How does the permissions backup and restore function work?
Security Explorer for SharePoint's backup functionality copies all permissions relating to sites, sub-sites, lists, libraries, and even documents into a flat file anywhere you choose. This is a fast operation since it does not backup the data, but only the permissions information. Restoring permissions is as simple as selecting a backup file, navigating down to where you want to repair permissions and restoring them to how they were at the time of the backup.
Does Security Explorer help with Compliance?
Yes. Security Explorer gives administrators the ability to implement the security required by compliance standards such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, GLBA and ITIL.

Security Explorer for SharePoint - Licensing
How is Security Explorer for SharePoint licensed?
Security Explorer for SharePoint is licensed on a per-server basis, so it requires one license for each Web front end server in a SharePoint farm. For example, if you have two Web front end servers, one application server, and one database server in your SharePoint farm, you would need 2 licenses.
Can I use a Security Explorer for SharePoint license to manage the other components on my server like NTFS permissions, File Shares, SQL Server permissions, etc?
No, Security Explorer for SharePoint licenses can only be used to manage permissions on SharePoint servers. In order to manage permissions on other components of the server such as NTFS, share, registry, SQL Server, etc., you will need to purchase a separate Security Explorer for File Server or Security Explorer for SQL Server license.
What happens if I exceed my license count?
When all of your Security Explorer for SharePoint licenses have been assigned to active servers then you will not be able to manage permissions on any further servers. Contact DBL Software Limited by email, sales@dbl.co.uk, to purchase more licenses.
Is an evaluation license available? What restrictions does it have?
Yes, a 30-day evaluation license is available. The evaluation license will allow you to browse and search the permissions on your SharePoint Servers but will not allow you to make any permission changes. You can also backup permissions on SharePoint Servers, but you cannot restore the permissions in evaluation mode.
Can I extend my evaluation?
You can request an extension for an evaluation license, contact sales@dbl.co.uk
Is there a limit to the number of places I can run the Security Explorer console?
No.
Example:
I have 15 administrators who need to manage permissions on our 10 SharePoint Servers from their desktop computers by installing Security Explorer on those desktop computers. In this case you would only need 10 licenses.
