Security Explorer® for SQL Server - Frequently Asked Questions
Can't I perform these same tasks with the SQL Server admin console?
Security Explorer provides added functionality that is not available with native tools such as searching of permissions and backup and restore of permissions.
How does the permissions backup and restore function work?
Security Explorer for SQL Server's backup functionality copies all permissions relating to all SQL Server securable objects into a flat file anywhere you choose. This is a fast operation since it does not backup the data, but only the permissions information. Restoring permissions is as simple as selecting a backup file, navigating down to where you want to repair permissions and restoring them to how they were at the time of the backup.
Does Security Explorer provide reporting?
Security Explorer can export databases of permissions but does not offer a wide range of formats, analysis or ability to filter and select what to report on. For security reporting in addition to management, consider Enterprise Security Reporter.
Does Security Explorer help with Compliance?
Yes. Security Explorer gives administrators the ability to implement the security required by compliance standards such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, GLBA and ITIL.
What versions of SQL Server does Security Explorer support?
Security Explorer for SQL Server supports SQL Server 2000 and 2005; as well as MSDE and SQL Server 2005 Express.

Security Explorer® for SQL Server - Licensing
How is Security Explorer for SQL Server licensed?
Security Explorer for SQL Server is licensed on a per-computer basis, so it requires one license for each SQL Server computer. One Security Explorer license can be used to manage any number of SQL Server instances on that physical machine.
Can I use a Security Explorer for SQL Server license to manage the other components on my server like NTFS permissions, File Shares, SharePoint permissions, etc?
No, Security Explorer for SQL Server licenses can only be used to manage permissions on SQL Servers. In order to manage permissions on other components of the server such as NTFS, share, registry, SharePoint, etc., you will need to purchase a separate Security Explorer for File Server or Security Explorer for SharePoint license.
What happens if I exceed my license count?
When all of your Security Explorer for SQL Server licenses have been assigned to active servers then you will not be able to manage permissions on any further servers. Contact your reseller or ScriptLogic representative to purchase more licenses.
Is an evaluation license available? What restrictions does it have?
Yes, a 30-day evaluation license is available, email sales@dbl.co.uk. The evaluation license will allow you to browse and search the permissions on your SQL Servers but will not allow you to make any permission changes. You can also backup permissions on SQL Servers, but you cannot restore the permissions in evaluation mode.
Can I extend my evaluation?
You can request an extension for an evaluation license, send email to sales@dbl.co.uk
Is there a limit to the number of places I can run the Security Explorer console?
No.
Example:
I have 15 administrators who need to manage permissions on our 10 SQL Servers from their desktop computers by installing Security Explorer on those desktop computers. In this case you would only need 10 licenses.
