Auto-Discovery of Network Devices
|
|
-
Scan the network to auto-discover network devices and servers
-
Discover network device attributes
-
Query a server or device for possible monitors that can be added
-
Add new monitors with a few mouse clicks
|
ipMonitor automatically scans your network and assembles a list of potential resources to monitor. Using the Startup Wizard, ipMonitor enables you to have full control over the range of IP addresses that are scanned for discovery and the types of discovery methods that are used (e.g., DNS, ICMP/PING, and SNMP); it also allows you to prevent specific servers, workstations, and devices from being scanned.
The ipMonitor Discovery Wizard offers a multitude of scanning methods, including IP address range, DNS zone, host import and network neighborhood; but also goes one step further by discovering device attributes, classifications and Layer-3 topology information. Additionally, ipMonitor makes it easy to add multiple SNMP Communities and any custom ports that are in use in your environment. As ipMonitor scans the network, you can even view the real time status of the scan.
In just minutes, ipMonitor returns a list of resources that were found during the network discovery process. You can quickly navigate through this list to determine which resources should be monitored and then launch the Add Server Wizard from within the same page to query the device or server to determine which pre-configured monitors can be utilized for that equipment.
Scan results are automatically cached by ipMonitor, allowing you to return to the results list and add monitors for specific devices at any time after the initial scan. This means that there is no need to rediscover the network each time the wizard is used, resulting in considerable time savings when large networks or many resources are involved.

SmartMonitor Recommended Settings
ipMonitor automatically recommends monitoring settings for applications and servers on the network. By capturing the knowledge of our expert SolarWinds engineers, we’ve built SmartMonitor® technology right into ipMonitor that offers up recommended settings for monitoring almost everything on your network – which saves you time and eliminates the need for you to navigate the murky waters of configuring settings by hand.
The SmartMonitor feature is designed with three key benefits in mind: accelerating deployment of ipMonitor, ensuring ease of use, and providing optimized monitor settings that are easy and intuitive to implement. After ipMonitor has auto-discovered your network gear and servers, the application presents you with a complete list of found devices and then recommends settings for monitoring each of these devices.
SmartMonitor Recommended Settings take the guess work out of your monitor configuration, reducing deployment time for even the most experienced network administrators.
Device Grouping
|
|
-
Create dynamic groups — SmartGroups — of devices and monitors based on user-defined filters
-
Facilitate management of groups of devices, including quickly assigning alerts to SmartGroups
-
Manage monitors based on device properties, contacts, or location
-
Automatically add a monitor or specific device type to SmartGroups
|
ipMonitor makes it painless to manage lists of devices and their logical organization with enhanced grouping and nested grouping capabilities. ipMonitor SmartGroups are dynamically generated based on the results of a user-defined filter, such as device property, contact profile, or location. When monitors that meet the filter criteria are added to the network, ipMonitor automatically associates them with the appropriate SmartGroup. Keeping your monitors organized for quick and easy management has never been so easy!
SmartGroups also create vital dependencies between monitors and devices, making it easy to assign alerting and recovery actions and eliminating the risk of redundant alerts being issued.
A centralized view of device and monitor groups is displayed in a Windows® Explorer-style tree format that offers one-click navigation to the properties and settings for that element, making it significantly easier and faster to manage groups of devices.
Network Mapping
|
|
-
Dynamically update network maps as devices are added
-
Create and edit all elements of network maps through ipMonitor's Web interface
-
Drill down through network maps to device and monitor level for quick problem resolution
-
Customize the look and feel of your network maps
|
Get a bird’s eye view of your network infrastructure with ipMonitor’s new automated network mapping feature. ipMonitor auto-discovers network devices and creates rich network maps that give you a graphical representation of your network's layout. Network maps can be customized to show the connection between elements or to add nested elements as you see fit.
As an added bonus, when new devices and monitors are added to your network, ipMonitor’s network maps will update dynamically to reflect changes and display the new elements. Plus, network maps enable you to visually monitor network health with status indictors that offer drill-down capabilities for quick problem resolution. One click in the map interface will take you directly to the status level of the chosen monitor or device.
The look and feel of each network map can be customized to show either a geographic- or device-centric view, and it can all be done through ipMonitor’s cutting-edge Web interface!.
Support for SNMP & WMI
|
