UniPrint Server
With the UniPrint universal printer driver, organizations can now maximize their print functionality and eliminate the headaches of printer driver management. Designed to streamline network print architectures, reduce bandwidth usage, and stabilize application delivery, UniPrint provides consistent printing, improves workforce productivity and overall user satisfaction.
UniPrint Server is a software-based printing solution for the Server based Computing (SbC) environment, and is the foundation of the UniPrint solution. UniPrint Server resides on an organization's Citrix/Terminal Servers, and enables users to print using a single print driver , UniPrint. With the added benefit of being able to convert all documents into PDF format, users can print any document rendered by UniPrint to any defined printer. The UniPrint Solution is flexible, scalable, and remains seamless in any heterogeneous computing environment. The UniPrint Solution Benefits make the UniPrint solution is the single best choice for enhancing your SbC printing experience.
UniPrint supports printing from traditional fat-client, or managed PC workstations and requires the UniPrint Client to be installed on these workstations. With UniPrint Gateway, Host or Web Editions, organizations can have simplified, seamless printing from thin-clients, mainframes and web browsers.

The illustration left outlines how UniPrint works, and the flow of data from application to printer. Only one print driver, UniPrint, is required on each Terminal Server/Citrix Server from where users require printing capabilities. When a SbC client prints using the UniPrint printer, a PDF document is created and sent to the UniPrint client. The UniPrint client can be configured to print automatically, preview, email, or save the PDF document. When printing a document, the UniPrint Client uses the workstation's native print drivers to spool documents for printing to client-defined printers. UniPrint works over LAN and WAN connections using Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP.
UniPrint Gateway Edition (32- and 64-bit)
The newly-released, redesigned UniPrint Gateway Edition is the ideal printing solution for all client platforms connecting to Citrix/Terminal Servers. The software manages printing services on behalf of thin clients. It also enables administrators to centrally manage and easily maintain printing functions across multiple platforms in local and remote locations.
The redesigned UniPrint Gateway Edition is simple to install, integrate, manage and use. Its capacity to generate PDF files conserves bandwidth. Its universal printer driver reduces server instability caused by multiple printer driver incompatibilities. Additionally, the new Gateway delivers superior printing speed, end-to-end print data protection, and many new features all geared towards providing an enhanced user experience.
UniPrint Host Edition
UniPrint™ Host Edition is the addition to the UniPrint Suite of Products. Now mainframe (AS/400 and Unix) users who connect through Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP can extend their printing capabilities beyond the mainframe environment. UniPrint Host Edition enables users to print from a mainframe application to a desktop or network printer both quickly and easily through their ICA or RDP session. Host Edition is compatible with both our UniPrint Server and Gateway Edition solutions.
Typically, mainframe users connecting to their mainframe applications lack the ability to print through their ICA/RDP session, limiting their print capability to mainframe defined printers. In addition, mainframe-generated print jobs are generally slow, as files are converted to large PCL5 format.
(Click to enlarge) UniPrint Host Edition provides mainframe servers with a centralized location where print jobs can be sent, converted into PDF format, and returned to the user's workstation via the ICA or RDP session stream. The printing subsystem on the User Workstation renders the PDF job into the native format understood by the destination printer. Users now have the ability to print to the network printer of their choice, with the additional benefit of increased print job speed, as PDF files are smaller than PCL5 file format.
UniPrint Web Edition
UniPrint™ Web Edition enhances the functionality of UniPrint Server by allowing print jobs to be archived on a UniPrint Web Edition-enabled IIS server. Now mobile workers without access to printers can save their print jobs to a web page, allowing them to print their documents once they return to their office. This capability is particularly useful to those mobile users who need real-time data captured and printed, but are unable to get immediate access to a printer.
Print jobs can be automatically retrieved by an on-demand java client or users can manually pick up print jobs by authenticating to the UniPrint Web Edition server. Web Edition works with both ICA and RDP protocols. The Citrix ICA Java Client or RDP Java clients are optional. The on-demand UniPrint Java Applet is distributed from the same Citrix® NFuse® or Web Interface server that distributes the on-demand ICA Java Client. Any java-enabled device can use the ICA Java Client and the UniPrint Java Applet.
Uniprint VDI Edition
The Ultimate Printing Solution for Virtualized Environments
If you are using VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) and you need to print, you need UniPrint VDI Edition. For these reasons:
Once you have more than a few users in your VDI environment, the following issues come up:
-
End users connect their own non-networked printers and want to use them.
-
Printer drivers for those devices have to be installed on each and every server / virtual guest OS / VDI system.
-
When printing to devices in remote locations (e.g. from home or outlying site office), print jobs can vary greatly in size. Across low bandwidth wide-area network (WAN) connections, large jobs can clog up WAN bandwidth, thereby slowing down remote devices, taking hours to print the document, or bringing the user's application access to a complete halt.
Additionally, within any organization, the more printers and end users you have, the more issues you have with:
-
Managing multiple print drivers for many types of printers and a variety of operating systems
-
Print drivers that behave badly, crash print servers, and/or consume a ton of resources when printing UniPrint VDI Edition solves your critical printing issues in VDI environments.
Simply put, by solving printer driver incompatibility issues, UniPrint VDI Edition enables easy access, fast printing and secure delivery, and at the same time, simplifies printer management. It also compresses print jobs to PDF (Portable Document Format) files, saving up to 90% bandwidth consumption, ultimately delivering faster and more consistent printing.
